Official Press Release August 1, 2014

The Recollection of Trees reached 100% of its kickstarter funding goal a week ahead of schedule, thanks to an enthusiastic local fan base.

Michigan author Sadie Francis Skyheart, 41, recently launched a crowdfunding campaign (www.kickstarter.com) to fund the final stages of publishing her debut novel, The Recollection of Trees, a young adult urban fantasy set in 1980s Michigan. The project deadline is Friday August 8, 2014, but it exceeded its $2800 funding goal this morning.

“My kids, husband, and I are screaming, crying, laughing, happy dancing, hugging, jumping up and down…we must look insane right now!” Skyheart told her project backers and fans earlier today.

When asked about plans for pledges beyond the original goal, Skyheart stated she would ask the fans what types of rewards they would appreciate.

“It’s not just about the funding. It’s really about the audience. It has been thrilling to receive the support of the community. Every time someone pledged or shared the project with their friends they were cheering for my dream, and that has felt amazing.”

Much of the book takes place in Jackson, Michigan, where Skyheart grew up. Jackson’s Michigan Theatre, Cascades Falls, and her alma mater, Jackson High School, are among the featured Jackson locations. Other key scenes occur in the Somerset Center and Torch Lake areas.

The Recollection of Trees tells the mystical tale of Iona Dickinson, an intuitive sixteen-year-old girl raised as a Baptist, who discovers that her real father is a witch.

“My intention has been to write a story for people who are discovering where they belong in the world. The main character is torn between two belief systems, two families, and two realities. Iona struggles with feeling ‘in between’ a lot. Her love interest, Dyllan, has his inner struggles too.”

The Recollection of Trees will be released later this fall. Skyheart hopes that the book’s success will have a positive impact on Michigan tourism, especially for the Jackson area.

“I may or may not be the next fantasy phenomenon mom, but I’d love for The Recollection of Trees to be a new reason for people to visit Michigan.”

Official Press Release July 23, 2014

Michigan author Sadie Francis Skyheart, 41, recently launched a crowdfunding campaign (www.kickstarter.com) to fund the final stages of publishing her debut novel, The Recollection of Trees, a young adult urban fantasy set in 1980s Michigan.

“I couldn’t imagine writing the story anywhere else,” says Skyheart, who grew up in Jackson, Michigan where much of the story takes place. “The characters and events are fictional, but the places are real.” The Michigan Theatre, Cascades Falls, and her alma mater, Jackson High School, are among the featured Jackson locations. Other key scenes occur in the Somerset Center and Torch Lake areas.

“I’ve written for regional magazines, but this is my first attempt at a fictional novel.” Sadie Francis Skyheart is a pseudonym, meant to honor her eclectic family tree.

The Recollection of Trees tells the mystical, emotional tale of Iona Dickinson, an intuitive sixteen-year-old girl raised as a Baptist, who discovers that her real father is a witch. The story begins with Iona questioning her sanity in a psychiatric ward, after admitting to her mother that she has been seeing her recently deceased grandfather’s ghost.

“It’s really about finding your place in the world and figuring out where you belong. She is torn between two belief systems, two families, and two realities. Iona struggles with feeling ‘in between’ a lot.”

Skyheart is the eleventh generation of her father’s family to live in Michigan, and hopes that the book’s success will have a positive impact on Michigan tourism, especially for the Jackson area.

“I’d love for The Recollection of Trees to be a new reason for people to visit Michigan. There are so many beautiful lakes, international award-winning wineries, amazing historical theatres, and quirky roadside attractions. Michigan winemakers and artists are America’s best kept secret.”

The Recollection of Trees project quickly became a Kickstarter STAFF PICK and is nearly 50% funded. Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing crowdfunding website for artists, authors, filmmakers, and other creative people. All-or-nothing funding means Skyheart’s project must reach its $2800 goal by August 8, 2014, or the project gets $0, but the author is optimistic.

“It’s not just about the funding. It has been thrilling to receive the support of the community. It’s about believing in my dream and that has been worth its weight in gold.”

‘The Recollection of Trees’ (kickstarter.com) Sadie Francis Skyheart, a Lansing author, is looking for help to self-publish her book, “The Recollection of Trees.” It’s a young adult urban fantasy set in Michigan in the 1980s, stocked with witches and ghosts.

If Skyheart gets funded, it will help her through the final stages of editing, cover design, promotion and printing. She’s raised $1,220 of her $2,800 goal.

“Every dollar is like someone saying, ‘yeah we believe in you,’” said Skyheart. “It’s neat to see who shows up for you when you put yourself out there.”
