Reed: Owl
Each of the Celtic trees correlates with an animal symbol. The Celtic month of Reed, September 5 - October 2, is associated with:
Animal: Owl
According to The Wild Unknown Animal Spirit deck, the owl symbolizes abundance, clairvoyance, and treasures. It is a mysterious and otherworldly creature found in folklore from East to West. The white owl is the companion of the goddess Lakshmi, who represents wealth, beauty, and good fortune. The owl is an omen that a boon or treasure is on the way, either in spiritual or material form. With owl wisdom on your side, you'll "see" and "know" exactly what to do with this boon--how it can further serve your dharma and bring abundance to the world. Trust that the wellspring of treasures is infinite. When owl energy is in balance, we feel generous, trusting, and secure. When it is out of balance, we feel financial strain/quarrels and scarcity. To bring it back into balance, make an offering. (I'd add, an offering can be a sacred moment between you and your divine connection, but it can also be offering your time or expertise to help someone else or volunteer in the community, aka "When you need a blessing, be a blessing.")
In the Ted Andrews' Animal Wise tarot, owl correlates to the The Hermit, which is about silent wisdom, vision, and inner guidance. The owl has been worshipped (and hated or avoided) throughout the world, but always it intrigues and fascinates, the epitome of mystery and magic. The owl is a powerful, instinctual creature that can teach us much. Its visual and auditory senses are tremendous, and so its appearance always reflects a heightening of our own senses, especially our intuition. It is a silent guide, teaching us to trust our instincts and silent impressions. It reminds us that help and guidance are available to us, but it is still up to us to act upon it. The owl is nocturnal, and night represents the darkness within, the places where great secrets and great treasures are hidden. The night is the place of our dreams and our fears. Owl energy can influence our dreams, making them more intense or bringing perspective and clarity. Their eyesight is adapted to see the slightest movement in the least amount of light. Their hearing is tuned to the subtlest sound. Their flight is silent, keeping their hunt undetected by prey. These keen senses show us that we may see things in a sharper way now, we may hear undercurrents in other people's voices and that there is sometimes strength in silence. We can trust our instincts and our first impressions, and when the right opportunity presents itself, we must aggressively and quietly go after it.
It seems that Owl, in both of these interpretations, is similar to Vulture. It is asking us to listen to our intuition, take care not to ignore our impressions of things, to trust divine timing and the processes of life, and take action when opportunity knocks.
Do what lights you up,
Sadie
Please note: Some people start the tree calendar with Birch in January, which follows the solar calendar. However, I learned them in an older tradition, which aligns with the 13-month lunar calendar. It's up to you to discern what feels right for you, of course.
