Ivy: Spider

Ivy: Spider

Each of the Celtic trees correlates with an animal symbol. The Celtic month of Ivy, occurring from August 8 to September 4, is associated with:

Animal: Spider

According to The Wild Unknown Animal Spirit deck, the spider is an ingenious creator of prosperity through life's work. Its greatest gift is weaving the thread of dharma into a vast intricate web that supports the spider and those around it, both financially and spiritually. It is hard work, but the spider neither tires nor becomes impatient. It reminds us that creativity is everywhere. Be process-oriented rather than results-oriented, and soon your "work" becomes like the weaving of a magical, priceless tapestry. Abundance follows. When spider energy is in balance, you feel appreciative, enthusiastic, and prosperous. When it's out of balance, you feel discouraged, tired, or forlorn. To bring it back into balance, choose playful creativity.

In the Ted Andrews' Animal Wise tarot, spider correlates to the High Priestess, which represents intuition and weaving of fate. Spiders signal the awakening of our creative energies. Spider shows us how to weave today the dreams we want fulfilled tomorrow. It teaches us the magic of creation, and heralds opportunities for creativity. It reflects three kinds of magic at play: the magic of creativity, the magic of assertion, and the magic of our connection to life and time. The magic of creativity is shown to us through the spider's ability to spin silk, a reminder of our own power to spin new creations. The magic of assertion shows us that only by speaking our truth and expressing our creative energies, we are empowered. The magic of our connection to life and time is seeing our part in the past and future, death and rebirth, waxing and waning--all reflected in the web's spiral. Creative rhythm brings us balance and polarity. There are two clear messages from spider: 1. be direct and straightforward so that you don't get tangled in your own web, and 2. do not be afraid to weave your creative threads in the dark (as most spiders do), trust that when the sun (opportunity) hits them, they will glisten with intricate beauty.

It always amazes me how the correlating symbols for each tree month weave such a beautiful cohesive message!

Do what lights you up,
Sadie

Please note: Some people start the tree calendar with Birch in January, which follows the solar calendar. However, I learned them in an older tradition, which aligns with the 13-month lunar calendar. It's up to you to discern what feels right for you, of course.
