Animal: Dragonfly

According to The Wild Unknown Animal Spirit deck, the dragonfly is an ancient and ethereal creature that awakens a sense of wonder in all. It is a symbol of the mind--always moving, shifting, shimmering, and changing. It is worth considering the quality of your mind and perception. Are they restless or still? Dream-like or crystal clear? The situation at hand may be different than it appears at first glance. Dragonfly reminds us to calm the mind so the light of wisdom can shine through. If you've been having a hard time concentrating or your mind has been too busy, dragonfly tells us to pause and focus on our breath.

In the Ted Andrews' Animal Wise tarot, dragonfly correlates to the King of Shapeshifters (cups), which tells us to trust in the power of light. Dragonfly symbolism is highly similar around the world. In Japan, they represent new joy and light, and many traditions speak of how they are the dragons of old in a new expression. Dragonflies have large compound eyes that can detect the subtlest of movements and shifting light. When the dragonfly appears, we will perceive the subtlest of movements in our own life. They remind us that as light shifts, so do our perceptions. We can rely on our strong perceptions and the power of light to succeed at this time, because our efforts have matured. Now is the time to shine. Express our creativity and our own inner light.
