Heather: Frog

Heather: Frog

Each of the Celtic trees correlates with an animal symbol. The Celtic day of Heather, the day before the summer solstice, is associated with:

Animal: Frog

In the Ted Andrews' Animal Wise Tarot, the frog is depicted as the Ace of Ancients (wands). Frogs have a tremendous mythology and lore about them and have been associated with the faerie realm and with Egyptian goddesses and gods (Herit, Isis, and Osiris). To some peoples of the Amazon, frogs call the rains and influence climate. In Europe, frogs are often associated with healing. Whenever frog appears, we are entering a time of new beginnings, our creative energies are awakening, and it is a time for new birth and new starts. Frog heralds transformation, and signals a beneficial time to hop into new endeavors or to accept invitations and offers. Frogs also possess a very sensitive tympanic organ, keenly attuned to sound and the water in their environment is a tremendous conductor of sound vibrations.

According to The Wild Unknown Animal Spirit deck, frog is about clearing, cleansing, and healing. Frog and the element water are nearly inseparable. It spends the beginning of its life entirely in the water, then emerges to rest on land. But no matter how "earthly" the frog becomes, its need for cleansing and rejuvenation is regular. Frogs can tend to become overworked and undernourished, so a healthy habit of self-care is essential. Frog reminds us that water helps us cleanse, forgive, and release. Time to dive in, frogs aren't meant to carry a heavy load. To bring your "frog" energy into balance, spend some time in a lake, river, ocean, or a bathhouse.

It honestly astounds me when I research each of these Celtic tree months, and their correlating symbols carry so much of the same meaning and theme. Clearly, this month of Heather is about transformation from an outgrown life to something more grounded, expanded, and steady. It is about clearing our energy and space to make room for opportunity, healing, and abundance ahead. It's also really fun to note that where heather often grows, there are likely frogs filling the air with their songs. It make be the perfect time to participate in a sound bath or to take a meditative walk in a wetland area, to boost our receptivity to new connections and opportunities.

Do what lights you up,
Sadie

Please note: Some people start the tree calendar with Birch in January, which follows the solar calendar. However, I learned them in an older tradition, which aligns with the 13-month lunar calendar. It's up to you to discern what feels right for you, of course.
