Ash: Naudhiz

Ash: Naudhiz

Each of the Celtic trees correlates with a Rune. Runes are a twenty-four letter alphabet, originating with Germanic tribes as early as the 2nd century. Runic glyphs were carved or etched into bone, wood, leather, jewelry, tools, weapons, and stone. Norse and Viking runic artifacts dating as far back as the 9th century have been found in several Northern European and Scandinavian countries, Russia, Turkey and North America. Notably, runes found in Canada and the United States pre-date Columbus by several hundred years, so he was definitely not the first visitor.

The Celtic month of Ash, February 21-March 20, is associated with:

Rune: Naudhiz, also Nauthiz

This rune presents the lesson of obstacles we create for ourselves, as well as constraints from other people. The true wisdom of Nauthiz comes from learning to discern the shadow side of ourselves or within a given situation.

We can ask ourselves: Where have I become stuck? Where have I resisted growth or change? What pattern seems to keep repeating?

When we cast light into the dark shadow, we begin to recognize that many obstacles and setbacks become our greatest teachers.

This rune carries meaning similar to the Hanged Man tarot card, (which I discuss here in relationship to Ash and the Norse god Odin) which indicates a delay before an inevitable change. It is a resting point to gain perspective and to prepare carefully.

Perhaps you're needing more space between actions or tasks. Give yourself extra time to pause between activities, regroup your thoughts, and breathe. Rest is productive.

REST IS PRODUCTIVE.

Do what lights you up,
Sadie

Please note: Some people start the tree calendar with Birch in January, which follows the solar calendar. However, I learned them in an older tradition, which aligns with the 13-month lunar calendar. It's up to you to discern what feels right for you, of course.
